Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges was one of the most accomplished men of his time. Born to a Senegalese enslave woman & French plantation owner in Guadeloupe, he became one of the finest fencers in Europe, was a virtuoso violinist & composer (of concertos, operas, symphonies & other works), as well as the conductor of the top symphony orchestra in Paris. During the French Revolution, he also served as a noteworthy colonel of the American Free Legion of Cavalry (which was mostly made of men of color) in the National Guard in Lille, who were on the front lines that drove back Austrian forces.
