Paul Laurence Dunbar was a prolific writer of poetry, novels, plays & song lyrics. He was born to enslaved parents (who were later emancipated) and became one of the first African American poets to be nationally and internationally acclaimed. His poems were published in the local newspaper: The Dayton Herald by the time he was 14. He also published & was the editor-in-chief of his High School newspaper, while being class poet & the president of the school’s literary society, despite being the only African American student there. He published a dozen collections of his poetry, four short stories & four novels, and his poetry showed up in nationally renowned magazines & newspapers, such as the New York Times.
