Susie King Taylor became the first Black teacher to openly educate African Americans at the age of 14 & later the first African American nurse in the Civil War, where she served the first Black regiment in the US Army. After the war, she opened a school for African American children, served with the Women’s Relief Corps & even became the secretary, treasurer & president of the Boston, Massachusetts chapter over a 12 year period. She wrote & published a memoir based on her experiences in the Civil War & became the first African American woman to do so.
